El Demento
Nora
el Demento
El Demento's fixation with "the cesspool of americana" has driven him down some long and lonely roads. A man who's obviously listened to as much Hank Williams as Bob Mould. Absorbed as much Will Oldham as John Doe. Filtered as much D. Boone as Jason Molina. The Kinman brothers seen through the eyes of the man in black.

The song "Nora" was recorded exclusively for Sound In A Vacuum between sessions for Songs From A Swamp Downstate and sessions for Just Like Yogurt.

No Fun
Sex Queen To Ex-Queen (lesbeen to has-been)
No Fun
No Fun are The Beatles of Surrey. Surrey, BC, Canada that is. If No Fun are not from your town then you've likely missed four decades of what's been hailed as "Canada's Best Band" and the "David Lynch of Rock and Roll". More often than not, No Fun are David M and Paul Leahy.

The song "Sex Queen to Ex-Queen (Lesbeen to Has-Been)" is the tragic story of fallen star Vanessa Williams, written at the time of her de-crowning, taken from the landmark album "The New Switcheroo". This song, which was performed live at Vancouver's World's Fair, is often credited for initiating Vanessa William's triumphant comeback.

Matt Moran
Multi-instrumentalist Matt Moran delivers another helping of DEVO-esque cocktail jazz with Operation Groove. There must be something in that Ohio water...

Zodiak
Acid Baby
The irrascible Zodiak (with a "K" motherfucker "K"!) formed from the remnants of a pre-pubescent band of misfits calling themselves "Triple Cross," Zodiak recorded Acid Baby in their home of Yellow Springs, Ohio, in 1993 with Chad "Paco" Carpenter.

This group of young swinging meat plagued the Dayton, Ohio, area in 93 and 94, picking up a number of fans, chicks, and STDs. They were also known for puking in sad Midwestern Parking lots after underage drinking binges of Mad Dog 20/20 Blue Hawaiian and Robitussin. They played with such Ohio acts as Cigarhead and Jumpy Fellows (a Cage side project).

"Acid Baby" is from the Acid Baby re-release. Also look for the forthcoming collection of previously unreleased demos and rarities called It's Not The Heat . . . It's The Humility

Baker Street Irregulars
Lilies and Ribbons
Brian McKnight
Singer/songwriter Brian McKnight compiled Hanging On For Dear Life at the end of the last century. A summation of his 20th century work, as it were. The songwriting is literate and melodic, and while the nods to Dylan and Lennon are obvious, McKnight's voice is more contemporary.

The Cheatin' Wives
Blame It On The Whiskey
It's hard to explain what's in that Chicago water. But somehow a whole generation of aging punk rockers discovered country music at the same time and the "insurgent country" pigeon hole started popping up everywhere.

The Cheatin' Wives probably take more directly from the fingers of Waylon Jennings and the heart of George Jones than from anything that may or may not be lurking in their musical pasts. But one thing's for certain, they know how to press brown glass to there lips every time a woman says goodbye.

David M's Ironic Acronym
Bottle Whisky
David M
David M is the twisted brain behind Canada's legendary alt.rock combo No Fun. David M's Ironic Acronym is strictly solo and highly ironic.

Woodie Guthrie was such a prolific writer that his lyrics are still being discovered and put to music by today's leading artists. Bottle Wisky [sic] continues this folking tradition and was commissioned for the Michael John Unger film "Dry Clean Only". Recorded in the basement August 18th, 2001.

Kyle Bravo
Piss You Off /
8th Wonder

Kyle Bravo
Kyle Bravo is a multi-talented artist from the South, currently (12/04) residing in New Orleans. We found out about Kyle through our good friend Liam Idiot and were knocked out by Kyle's Sad and Drunken Songs From Times Long Since Passed CD, which was packaged in a brown paper bag with liner notes printed out as a liquor store register receipt. A kindred DIY spirit indeed.

Liam Idiot
Just Get Gone
Liam Idiot
Liam's one of those interesting characters who lives from experience to experience -- a zine editor and hobo traveller with a hope chest of anecdotes deeper than you'd expect for such a young man.

"Just Get Gone" is from a collection of songs Liam recorded in 2002. Refusing To Get Dressed is full of Americana, from the dust bowl to the cereal bowl.

Also be on the look out for his written work, both in his War Against The Idiots zine, and in his two volumes of Tiny Stories From Troubled Times.

Naked & Shameless
Drinking Song #18
N&S
Naked & Shameless are Chicago's acoustic punk kings of kitsch rock. An entertainment experience unto themselves. Lore has it that Buck Naked and Dave Shameless met singing karaoke in hotel bars in Indonesida. Besides their own mischeivous originals (like "Drinking Song #18" from their acclaimed CD 13 Drinking Songs), the duo also knows hundreds of covers that they've mutated and perverted beyond salvation.

Available for weddings, parties, bars, concert halls, stadiums, action movies, public office, detox, and encores back at the hotel...

White Ballaz
Big Shirley
The White Ballaz are a group who make their home and their living in the classy north shore suburbs of Chicago. With an extensive background in pimping, escort services, seduction, and bling, they decided it was time to start bragging about it. Member Terrence Bonewell, aka Goomba, aka Proffesor Plumperdickle explains: "All these cats on these rap albums you are hearing these days think they got game. Man, we had game when they were still tadpoles in their daddy's nuts. We been doin this for too long not to have it documented, so we decided to put it down. We keep it real. Everything from takin' a shit to mackin' a female, we keep it real."

The Ballaz can usually be found kicking back with their massive entourage at many local high-class establishments. "Man dog, if I'm not sippin' on some expensive champagne while I got three females rubbin' my feet, I'm wasting my time," explains member Benny Ill, "I don't know how these other cats out here think they gonna live a long happy life when they don't appreciate the essentials: fat blunts, thick hoes, and fine liquor."

Sharkula
I Love A Raw
THIG!
A legend in the making. Sharkula (aka Thig aka Thigahmahjiggee aka Brian Wharton) is responsible for a prodigious string of raw DIY hip-hip recordings (as well as some surprising cross-over side projects).

"I Love A Raw" is an early single mix of a straight-up track that found its way onto his Martin Luther King Jr. Whopper With Cheese CD, with beats by Graduate and featuring frequent collaborator and DJ Chuck Sunshine (Phonograph Scientists).

PIMMEL
These guys may not be the sharpest tools in the shed (ask about the time they kicked the side of an atomic bomb -- no joke!), but they know good clothes when they see them. Whether decked out in PVC and leather or in Armani, their penchant for dark whimsy remains.

Look for their appearance on the Argentinian Cure tribute box set Pink Pig, The Whole Cure In The Mirror.

Pimmel are: Lord God Ooze (throbbers), Deviant (twangers), Deiter the Meter (140bpm), and Nob (twidly noises).

Mary
Collateral Damage (live)
Mary
"Collateral Damage" comes from the live Day Of Infamy, recorded by Ian Hunter (the late Vancouver media innovator and activist, not the guy from Mott the Hoople) for a radio simulcast event shortly after Mary's 1991 tour.

Mary was born of punk but never adhered to a narrow punk ethos. There was plenty of volume and speed and venom, but their expressive palate was much wider. Prog without the pretense. Heavy without the metal.

Ye Godz!
The Station For Everything You Could Possibly Want (sign on)
Ye Godz!
On the eve of a 13 year cycle Ye Godz! coalesced on this planet 13 doors down from a crack house, over the heads of abusive white trash families and across the hall from "up for it" Wright State University nursing students on a blistering summer night in August of 1996.

Ye Godz! barely paid attention to the dog shit in the "faw-yay" or the radio control cards in the parking lot or Mississippi Mud oozing from their pores. They imbibed magic and let their mindz roam in order to preach the new gospel of the Grand Waterwoman John philosophy under the watchful eye of the Hardest One. Herein lies the blueprint for sonic apotheosis. Listen well and learn the dogma.

This track is from We Are Colonel Glenn Highway (Preach Yeah!)

The New Heads
Mike's Theme
Ye Godz!
The New Heads weaselled their way onto the wasteland of Vancouver's late 80's music scene with the class of a fermented crouton. This was more a loose gang of music fans and nasty drunks than a traditional band; however the legend lingers on thanks to a legacy of live shows, public stunts, instant singles, television and movie appearances, fashion modelling, and the one-of-a-kind cassalbum "Nancy Punks".

"Mike's Theme" is from the "lost" New Heads tapes discovered in the Atomic Mouse archives and assembled as Taped Over.
